Furnishing your home with cozy handmade makes is something all quilters take great pride in. Quilts on all the beds in the house, tablerunners and placemats on the dining room table, throw pillows on the sofa, and potholders in the kitchen. There is no room left not decorated with our handmade makes. Even the houses of our loved ones receive our love through the time and effort we put into creating something handmade to be passed on through generations.
We’ve just released our GeoBloom Collection by The Sewcial Bee Collective and it inspired me to do just this. My new favorite patchwork project to work on lately has been bed runners. Bigger than a tablerunner but not as time consuming as a big quilt, it is something I know I can make from start to finish and is a great element to add to your room to give it the right amount of quilty vibes.
I recently made a bed runner for my daughter that she adores and it also doubles as a play mat in her room. It has become a part of her fort building and a cozy spot for her to build with her blocks and play with her barbie dolls. I knew I needed to make one for myself right away when I saw the prints in GeoBloom fabrics. They were the perfect choice to add a peaceful, feminine, and floral touch to my bed room decor.
All you need is to learn one simple quilt block and this modern, fresh, cottage core vibes bed runner will give you that elegant, elevated look your room has been needing.
There are 12 blocks in this bed runner and a 2 1/2″ wide sashing. The majority of fabrics call for only a F8 (11”x 18”) of fabric besides for the background fabrics and the fabric that frames our 4 ½” squares. Cutting is a breeze with only four different size pieces to cut and then the sashing strips. All this creates a fast and rewarding project to make for yourself or gift to your loved ones.
I used a loftier batting and stitched ½” quilting lines to create a softer, luxurious feel. It was my first time using thicker batting and I got to say, I am in LOVE! Adding the matching 2.5 binding was like the icing on the cake. I went with the more subdue multicolor strips to really let all the GeoBloom prints I used shine.
Before we dive into the tutorial I have to put a spotlight on the backing I used, ‘Marigold Charm’. These 2 ¼” tall blooms are framed in an oval setting. Seeing them all lined up in rows is exactly as the name suggests, SO CHARMING! I am swooning over the soft blue/green background and the sweetest shade of pink in the blooms. So you always have the option of using the back as your front for a different look.
