Beginner quilters, last min holiday makers, I got a special quilt tutorial to celebrate you and your loved ones! Want to give the magic of receiving a quilt for the holidays but don’t want to break the bank or is your time being spread too thin? My new favorite way to design my quilting projects is to use AGF precuts! Not only because of its convenience but you are able to play with all the prints in the collection, yet create so many different kinds of quilting designs.

In celebration of Bari J’s newest collection, ‘Fairview Avenue’, I decided to design the ‘Vintage Wonders’ quilt, using AGF’s 10” Fabric Wonders! This design is so traditional and yet modern and when used with the gorgeous all over prints in Fairview Avenue this quilt gives me vintage, nostalgic, cozy vibes.

With 40, 10” squares you are able to create 40 quilt blocks. In this quilt we are only going to use 35 of them but with your remaining 8 ½” blocks you can create the most gorgeous potholders, which is what I plan on doing with mine. These will make for great hostess gifts or fun to display in your own kitchen this season.

Grab yourself a 10” Fabric Wonder from Fairview Avenue and follow along in the video below.

Cutting Directions:

Place two 10” fabric squares on top of each other following the Fabric Pairing guide. Feel free to use your own fabric pairings by pairing a light fabric and dark fabric together.

Once you have paired your squares, take a pair of squares and line your quilting ruler up on the 2 1/2” line on the bottom edge and cut. Next line the ruler up to the sides of one of your pairs of squares and repeat this same process, lining up the 2 1/2” line to the edge of the fabric and cutting.

Using a rotating cutting mat works great, so you can rotate your mat to cut the other two sides following this same process without having to touch the fabric.

Once you have made all the cuts, you will reveal two 5” squares, eight 2 1/2” squares, and eight 2 1/2” x 5” rectangles. With all these pieces you are able to create two quilt blocks. It’s the same quilt block construction but the fabrics will be placed differently creating opposite fabric placement in each block. Repeat this process with all your paired squares. Cutting at 2 1/2” on each side to reveal your block pieces, making sure you make two blocks for each pairing.

As I was cutting my pieces I placed all my pieces on a cutting mat, laying out all my block pieces following the block design so they were all in order and ready to be chain pieced together. I brought it over to my sewing machine and started to chain piece my rows together. Once I had all my rows complete I sewed my rows together to create all 40 blocks.

Feel free to create your own quilt layout or follow mine.

There is no wrong or right way, the fun part is placing them next to each other  and  following your heart. Choose your favorite backing from Fairview Avenue and quilt some straight lines 1” apart! Measuring in at approx 42” x 59” it is a perfect lap quilt for reading or hand stitching by the fire on a cold winter evening!

Happy Sewing,

Melissa
